It's true

Scientific literature, if done right, is boring to read. If you are thinking about a career in science, you should know this. Many people only come into contact with science through scientific journalism, but that has as much to do with scientific literature as a fast food advert has to do with a cookbook.

Although P makes it sound quite bad, I would not want it to change. I feel like scientific literature is the only place left where truth is the most important value. Not what someone claims is the truth, not what we wish would be the truth, just the indisputable, rational, often uncomfortable truth. The kind of truth that doesn't raise scepticism but that withstands it. That is difficult, confusing and often very boring but that is what we do as scientists.

In other news: You can now acquire bird.lol merchandise! I set up a shop with some fun products because people asked for it. I am not intending to turn this into a money making project (although it would be nice to cover hosting costs and domain fees). If you want to show your support, though, feel free to pick something up. There is a convenient button in the top menu.

Panel 1:
P is in a video call with H.
P: Hey, how’s it going? So, I read the first draft of your thesis. I have to say, it is super exciting to read! It really tries to convince me of your point on an emotional level!
Panel 2:
H: Well, thank you, I ...
P: Unfortunately, that is not at all what it is supposed to do.
H: Oh.
Panel 3:
P: We’re scientists. We write boring, difficult to read articles that contain lots of dry math and statistics that will leave you more confused than you were before reading.
