If you don't know what Roko's Basilisk is, you should seriously consider leaving it at that. Just enjoy the stupid pun. I know this is meant to be a funny site and I write some crazy nonsense in these blog posts sometimes, but not today. If you have an active mind but don't like handling unpleasant thoughts or existential dread, *do not research Roko's Basilisk*. Nobody will judge you, it is not a sign of weakness and in many regards it is the smartest thing to do.
Sometimes we tend to forget that our minds can go to seriously scary places that can be outright dangerous. If you are like me, you can't contain your curiosity and go there regularly, despite the pain and trauma it may cause. You get better at coping with the emotional distress, the confusion, the existential dread as you navigate these dark corners of human thought. However, I recently realized that it is totally not cool to take people to these places without their consent. It is an entirely healthy ability of our subconscious mind to keep us away from thoughts that could harm us. If someone "doesn't get it", that might mean they just don't want to get it. So don't push them!
Oh, and in case you know what Roko's Basilisk is and think I'm completely overreacting, consider this: Have you really thought deep about it? You probably have some kind of argument why it's all impossible or unlikely and everything is fine after all. But how much did you think about this argument? Did you stop thinking about it because you were done with it or because you were scared? It's probably the latter, if you are able to admit it or not. And that's a coping mechanism, right there. Not everyone can do this. Consider this when talking to people.
