Theoretical Science is Weird

You know that problem they've been working on for months? Yeah, they just proved that it can't be solved. Isn't that awesome? And what's even better is that the method they used to show this could be applied to many other problems, meaning that they have lot's more work ahead of them for the next years. What problems you ask? Oh, that would be too difficult to explain now but don't worry, they don't come up anywhere and don't have any applications. But there's at least ... like ... six people in the world who care. They meet at a workshop once a year where they talk about these problems. These are really cool people, though. You can tell because some of them published a paper once with someone who published a paper with Paul Erdős.

Panel 1:
P is talking to Prof. Owl.
P: Have you heard? Someone proved that the famous conjecture we based most of our research on is not actually true!
O: Whaaaat...???
Panel 2:
O: That ... that means that ... that is ...
Panel 3:
O: ... brilliant news! This calls for a celebration! Go get some nice tea and I’ll get the number theory book!
P: Hold your horses!
Panel 4:
P: They didn’t use our proof for the central lemma. They didn’t cite us.
O: Outrageous! The celebration is called off. Let’s go to the bar.
